Wausau Receives Focus on Energy Grants
The City is “greening” the wastewater
treatment plant. Mayor Jim Tipple announces that the City
of Wausau has received $232,000 Focus on Energy Grants to
replace equipment at the wastewater treatment plant. Becher
Hoppe Associates, Inc. assisted the City in evaluating the
equipment, assessing the energy savings, and preparing the
grant application.
The City will be generating electricity on site using micro-turbines
fueled by bio-gas. Bio-gas is a by-product of treating the
sanitary solids. This energy will be used within the plant,
reducing the need for outside energy. High efficiency
blowers that add air to help treat the wastewater are
replacing the older, less efficient equipment. New controls
are being installed to adjust the air added based on how
much wastewater is coming into the plant.
Brad Marquardt, Director of Public Works and Utilities,
reports that the new equipment will not only reduce energy
consumption but will also lower the operations cost. |
